Stalag XVIII D was visited by a group of 50 eighth and ninth grade students from the Pohorje Battalion Oplotnica primary school

The field trip was organized by the Regional Association of Slovenian Officers Slovenska Bistrica as part of the “Working with Youth” project.

The students learned about the importance of understanding the past, which helps to appreciate the freedoms we have today and strengthens the awareness of why peace and democracy are values that must be actively protected. Such projects help young people think independently and not accept information without thinking. They also help develop critical thinking in young people, strengthen compassion and humanity, respect for human rights, and the awareness that certain actions (or inaction) can have real consequences for other people. Above all, the importance of preserving memory is emphasized. If young people do not know these stories, there is a risk that history will be forgotten or that someone will deliberately distort it.
